About this role
Position Available: NLP & Generative AI Data Scientist
Location: Gloucestershire OR Hertfordshire
Salary: £45,000 - £50,000 + Benefits
Experience needed: We're looking for a Data Scientist with strong NLP and Python skills, and hands-on experience with large language models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). You'll be comfortable developing production-ready AI tools and collaborating across engineering, IT, and business functions.
About the role:
We're hiring a Data Scientist specialising in NLP and Generative AI to help build and deploy cutting-edge language-based solutions across a complex engineering organisation.
You'll work with internal users across diverse teams - from design and manufacturing to systems engineering - developing tools powered by large language models (LLMs), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and modern NLP techniques. From data preparation to algorithm design and deployment, you'll own the full data science lifecycle and help shape the future of AI capability across the business.
This is a hands-on, impactful role within a newly formed GenAI team, with plenty of opportunity to influence tooling, architecture, and strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver NLP and LLM-based algorithms tailored to internal user needs
- Apply RAG methods to provide accurate, context-rich AI responses using internal data
- Work with stakeholders across engineering, manufacturing, and systems teams to translate needs into AI solutions
- Clean, process, and manage data using ETL, API, SQL/NoSQL, and related tools
- Validate and refine models, ensuring they are robust, responsive, and production-ready
- Contribute to the organisation's AI technology roadmap, bringing in new ideas and approaches
- Support Agile project delivery, from concept to deployment
- Present findings and capabilities clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
What we need from you:
- Strong background in NLP and AI, particularly with LLMs and RAG-based solutions
- Proficiency in Python and modern AI/ML libraries (e.g. HuggingFace, LangChain, TensorFlow, PyTorch)
- Experience with data exchange and storage frameworks (e.g. APIs, SQL, NoSQL, Parquet)
- Track record of delivering technical solutions in Agile environments
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
Beneficial, but not essential:
- Experience with containerisation (Docker)
- Awareness of secure data handling and information classification
