Java / Kafka Developer

Location: Fully Remote (UK Based)

Rate: £525 / day (Umbrella / Inside IR35) - NON-NEGOTIABLE

Contract Length: 6 Months (with strong view to extend) Clearance: Active SC Clearance (Mandatory / Essential)

The Role: An exceptional contract opportunity has arisen for a Senior Java Developer with deep Apache Kafka experience to join a major Central Government Department. You will work autonomously under general direction, taking responsibility for designing, coding, and implementing complex, high-throughput event-driven microservices.
This is a fully remote engagement offering brilliant project longevity, allowing you to drive engineering standards and lead peer reviews on critical public sector streaming platforms.
Security Vetting: Due to the secure nature of the environment, candidates must hold active, transferable SC Clearance at the time of application.
Key Responsibilities

• Complex Software Engineering: Design, code, verify, test, and refactor complex backend applications and streaming services from agreed specifications.
• Event-Driven Design: Develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and real-time streaming architectures using Apache Kafka.
• Technical Governance: Active contributor to the selection of development tools and security practices. Lead technical peer reviews of colleagues' work to ensure high-quality, well-engineered outcomes.
• Autonomy & Issue Resolution: Investigate, define, and autonomously resolve complex engineering and performance bottlenecks in production-adjacent environments.

Technical Stack & Requirements:

• Expert-level Java (Modern versions, Spring Boot microservices framework).
• Deep production experience with Apache Kafka (topics, partitions, consumers, KStreams, schema registry).
• Solid experience implementing security measures within distributed cloud systems (AWS preferred).
• Familiarity with containerized deployments via Docker / Kubernetes and automated CI/CD pipelines.
