Lead Service Designer - UK Public Sector


£575/day (Umbrella rate - Inside IR35) | Fully Remote
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Service Designer to join a leading digital team within the UK Public Sector. This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional with a proven track record of designing user-centric services that meet both user needs and policy intent. The role is fully remote UK based role with ocassionl travel required.


The Role


You will be instrumental in leading the service design of complex, end-to-end services. This position requires extensive experience working with Government Digital Services (GDS) standards and principles. Your core responsibilities will include:


  • Leading the design of accessible and usable services across all digital and offline touchpoints.

  • Mapping and analysing complex service ecosystems, identifying pain points and opportunities for improvement.

  • Collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including policy, operations, product, and technical experts.

  • Developing and communicating service design concepts using artefacts such as service blueprints and journey maps.

  • Facilitating engaging workshops and co-creation sessions with stakeholders and users.

  • Advocating for and embedding user-centred and inclusive design practices across the organisation.

  • Mentoring and guiding junior service designers, contributing to a vibrant design community.

About You

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in a similar role within the UK Public Sector or a consultancy with a focus on government projects. You should be passionate about designing in the open and collaborating with others to deliver impactful public services.
Key Skills & Experience:


  • Demonstrable experience leading service design projects in a complex public sector environment.

  • Deep understanding of GDS and the GOV.UK service standard.

  • Proficiency in mapping existing systems and processes to provide evidence-based "as-is" analysis.

  • Expertise in facilitating workshops and engaging diverse stakeholder groups.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate complex design concepts visually and verbally.
