Head of Data - Government - 12 month contract - SC Clearance
An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead the data strategy for a government department in the South West. This senior leadership role will shape the future of data across the organisation, ensuring it supports long-term capability and strategic goals.
The successful candidate will define and deliver a compelling data vision, establish governance frameworks, and represent the organisation at senior levels across government. You will also be responsible for building internal capability and forging partnerships with academia, industry and other government bodies.
Due to the sensitive nature and urgency of the work involved, only sole British nationals will be considered and candidates will ideally hold active SC clearance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing a long-term data strategy
- Leading the design and assurance of data systems and policies
- Overseeing data governance and regulatory compliance
- Supporting organisational upskilling in data management
- Building external partnerships to enhance data impact
- Representing the organisation in senior cross-government forums
Essential experience and skills:
- Senior leadership in data governance, strategy or assurance
- Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
- Ability to work in ambiguity and deliver innovative solutions
- Experience of building inclusive and high-performing teams
- Experience translating strategic vision into practical plans
- Degree in a relevant field such as data science, computer science or mathematics
Technical competencies:
- Excellent communication and storytelling across media
- Strategic thinking and analytical problem-solving
- Strong networking skills across sectors
- DAMA accreditation (Associate level or above) or willingness to attain within six months
Desirable attributes:
- Experience delivering complex solutions under uncertainty
- Ability to influence senior government stakeholders
- Expertise in complementary domains such as AI or data analytics
