In this month’s edition of our Consultant Career Story, we feature Seema Chand, Business Partner in the Accountancy & Finance team at Henderson Scott.

Seema began her career in sales before discovering her passion for recruitment. Combining her commercial insight with a people-focused approach, she now helps businesses across the Accountancy & Finance space find the right talent to drive their success.

Here, she shares her journey, what she enjoys most about the role, and her advice for anyone considering a career in recruitment.

Can you tell us about your background before joining Henderson Scott and what led you to recruitment?

Before joining Henderson Scott, I worked in sales as a Business Development Manager. That role helped me build strong client-facing and relationship skills, which naturally translated into recruitment.

About a year ago, I made the move into the recruitment industry and quickly found a passion for Accountancy & Finance. Working for a large FTSE 250 corporate business gave me valuable insight into the commercial world and strengthened my interest in supporting businesses with top financial talent.

What drew you to specialise in Accountancy & Finance recruitment?

When I first moved into recruitment, I naturally found myself working within the Accountancy & Finance space. I was quickly drawn to the structure and commercial impact of finance roles, as well as the people behind them.

Every business relies on strong financial talent, and helping connect those professionals with the right opportunities is what makes this specialism so rewarding.

How has your journey at Henderson Scott progressed since joining?

My journey so far has been really positive. I’ve enjoyed the flexibility Henderson Scott offers and the autonomy to grow my desk in a way that feels authentic.

One of the most rewarding parts has been building relationships based on trust and genuine connection. It has allowed me to take a more personal approach to recruitment and focus on developing long-term partnerships with both clients and candidates.

What does a typical day look like for you as an Accounting & Finance recruiter?

No two days are the same, but my day usually involves managing live roles, progressing shortlists, and speaking with clients and candidates. I spend a lot of time on business development, building new relationships and deepening existing ones.

I also meet regularly with both candidates and clients, whether in person or virtually, to really understand their needs. A key part of my day is speaking to clients about high-quality candidates I’ve met and discussing how they could add value to their teams.

What skills do you think are most important for success in Accountancy & Finance recruitment?

Resilience is absolutely key. Recruitment is full of highs and lows, and the ability to bounce back makes all the difference. Alongside that, you need drive, consistency, and a genuine hunger to succeed.

It’s about staying positive, continuing to learn, and maintaining the motivation to push forward, even on tougher days. Those are the traits that lead to long-term success in this sector.

What do you find most rewarding about working in recruitment?

What I find most rewarding is the variety and pace of the role. The Accountancy & Finance market is always evolving, and things can change quickly, whether it’s new opportunities, client needs or shifts in the market. It keeps the job exciting and challenges you to keep learning and adapting.

But above all, it’s the people. Meeting clients and candidates from all backgrounds and helping them reach their goals is what makes the job truly meaningful.

What advice would you give someone looking to start a career in recruitment, and is there anything specific you'd say to those considering Accountancy & Finance recruitment?

My biggest advice is to come into recruitment with no expectations, just a genuine drive to succeed. Be prepared to work hard, stay consistent, and keep going even when progress feels slow. The results always come, and they’re worth it.

As for Accountancy & Finance recruitment, it might sound technical, but it’s not difficult to learn. I fell into it by chance and have loved it ever since. It’s a strong, evolving market with plenty of opportunity, and once you find your rhythm, it’s incredibly rewarding.

Seema’s journey shows how transferable skills and the right mindset can open the door to a fulfilling career in recruitment. By combining her commercial background with a people-first approach, she’s found success in a dynamic and fast-moving sector.
