If you're considering a career in recruitment, there's no better way to get a feel for a company than hearing directly from the people behind the scenes. Katie Ball is our Talent Acquisition Specialist at Henderson Scott and plays a central role in shaping our internal team. Here, she shares what a typical day looks like in her role and what it’s really like to work at Henderson Scott.
What does your role involve, Katie?
I’m part of the team responsible for growing Henderson Scott by identifying and attracting brilliant recruiters to join our business. That involves everything from sourcing talent and managing the hiring process to supporting successful onboarding. But for me, it’s also about finding people who will thrive here, who will enjoy the culture, who are ambitious, and who want to be part of something exciting.
Talk us through a typical day.
Every day is different, but here’s how it often unfolds:
9:00am: I kick off with catch-ups or quick stand-ups with hiring managers to understand live requirements and priorities for the week.
10:30am: I usually connect with consultants or directors across our specialisms, including Technology, Legal, Sales & Marketing, and Accountancy & Finance, to get insight into how teams are growing and where we might need to focus next.
12:00pm: A quick lunch and maybe a scroll through LinkedIn for inspiration or candidate updates.
1:00pm: I work on content to support hiring, writing job ads, planning social posts, and identifying the best ways to showcase our culture and roles.
3:00pm: I move into outreach mode, screening candidates, having informal chats, and qualifying people who’ve applied. It's important to get a feel for both skills and motivations, and where someone might be the best fit.
4:30pm: Ending the day on a high. Offering someone a role or moving them into the final interview stages is always a great way to wrap things up.
How did you end up in Talent Acquisition?
I’ve always enjoyed working with people and had experience doing some internal recruitment in a previous role. I didn’t come from an agency background, but I was approached by an internal recruiter and the timing felt right. I joined as a rookie and have never looked back.
What’s the culture like at Henderson Scott?
It’s ambitious, supportive, and full of energy. There’s a real focus on recognising people’s effort and celebrating success, whether that’s personal milestones, placements, promotions, or big deals. What really stands out is how much people genuinely want each other to do well. There’s a strong sense of teamwork and inclusion here, no matter what level you’re at.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Offering someone a job never gets old, especially when you know they’re going to be joining a team that will genuinely support them and help them thrive. I also love seeing how people progress. When someone I placed shares that they’ve made their first placement or hit their personal best, it feels like a win for us both.
What advice would you give someone thinking about joining Henderson Scott?
