In this edition of our Consultant Career Story series, we feature Rowan Hemblade, a key member of our Legal recruitment team who has achieved three promotions in under 2.5 years. Rowan’s journey is a great example of what is possible at Henderson Scott for those who are ambitious, curious, and committed to developing as specialists. 

Here, he shares what first drew him to legal recruitment, what has supported his rapid growth, and his advice for others looking to build a successful career in this high-performing market. 

Can you tell us about your journey at Henderson Scott so far and what first drew you to legal recruitment?

After finishing university, I was drawn to private practice legal recruitment in London because of the calibre and scale of the market. London is one of the world’s most influential legal hubs, home to leading lawyers and international firms. The pace of the market and the way different practice areas evolve alongside global events really appealed to me, and it felt like an exciting space to specialise in. 

You have achieved three promotions in less than 2.5 years. What do you think has driven that level of progression?

A large part of my progression comes down to the people I was surrounded by when I first joined. The experience within the team gave me real guidance and support from day one. 

At Henderson Scott, there are also no barriers to progression. Your career path is entirely driven by how you apply yourself, the consistency you bring, and the ambition you have. Knowing that my growth was in my own hands motivated me to push myself and take ownership of my development. 

What does working in legal recruitment look like day-to-day, and what do you enjoy most about the specialism?

Connecting with lawyers and learning about their specialisms is easily the most enjoyable part of the role. Every conversation gives you insight into a new area of law, and there is always something interesting to understand about how firms operate, where the market is heading, and what lawyers value in their careers. 

What support or training at Henderson Scott has helped you grow so quickly?

Henderson Scott offers a series of structured training programmes that support you at every stage of your career. It doesn’t matter how junior or senior you are, there is always something to help you develop. The combination of formal training and day-to-day guidance from senior colleagues has been a huge part of my progression. 

What achievements are you most proud of to date?

It is difficult to choose a single moment, but I genuinely feel proud when I place lawyers in roles that align with their long-term aspirations. Helping someone take the next meaningful step in their career is incredibly rewarding and something that is hard to replicate elsewhere. 

What skills or qualities do you believe are essential to succeed in legal recruitment?

Being personable, authentic, and specialised. Lawyers value trust and expertise, so you need to bring genuine interest to the conversations you have and be committed to understanding your market. 

What advice would you give to anyone considering a career in legal recruitment or joining Henderson Scott?

I would highly recommend it. Legal recruitment is interesting from a business perspective because you learn so much about the intricacies of different practice areas, and you never stop developing your knowledge. 

As for Henderson Scott, you are given all the tools you need to progress, along with a supportive culture that encourages you to grow professionally. It is a great place for anyone who is ambitious and wants to build a rewarding career.
