In this edition of our Consultant Career Story series, we catch up with James Vickers, Divisional Manager at Henderson Scott, to explore his path into recruitment, his rapid rise through the ranks, and the lessons he’s picked up along the way.
James’s story is a standout example of how the right mix of determination, curiosity, and support can spark exceptional growth in recruitment.
1. Can you tell us a bit about your background before joining the recruitment industry?
Absolutely. I studied Urban Design at Newcastle University between 2017 and 2020. After graduating, I stayed in Newcastle for a year, working first at Betfred in Whitley Bay and then at TrucTyre, a national tyre recovery business. After a year, I decided it was time to return home, and that’s when I entered the world of recruitment, joining Henderson Scott as a Recruitment Consultant.
2. What first attracted you to recruitment, and how did you find your way into the industry?
Like many, I didn’t grow up planning to become a recruiter. But what drew me in was the opportunity to be rewarded directly for the effort I put in. At the time, I was working long hours in a role with no commission or incentive structure. I wanted to feel the impact of my work, and recruitment offered exactly that.
3. What was your first role at Henderson Scott, and how has your career progressed since then?
I joined Henderson Scott in August 2021 as an Associate Consultant. Just two months later, I was promoted to Consultant, and within seven months, I progressed again to Senior Consultant.
Eighteen months in, I moved into a Managing Consultant role, leading two direct reports. Nine months later, I was promoted to Divisional Manager, where I now lead a team of four. It’s been fast paced, and I’ve enjoyed every moment.
4. What does your current role involve, and what do you love most about it?
Today, I lead our Sales & Marketing Consumer Division. Over the last three years, we’ve grown the brand from the ground up, and it’s now recognised as a specialist partner in the space.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is the tangible impact we’ve made, both on the businesses we support and the professionals we’ve placed. I’m also incredibly proud of my team’s growth. This year alone, I’ve promoted four people. Watching others succeed is a huge driver for me.
5. How has working at Henderson Scott shaped your growth as a consultant and a professional?
Henderson Scott has played a major role in my development. From structured training to on-the-job learning and mentorship from the Leadership and Talent & Development teams, the support has been consistent and impactful.
Some of the key skills I’ve developed include:
- Active listening and consultative communication
- Business development and market mapping
- Time management and prioritisation
- Building trust and long-term relationships
- Financial and commercial awareness
- In-depth sector knowledge
- Resilience and adaptability in a high-performance environment
- People/team management
- Strategical leadership
6. What advice would you give to someone thinking about a career in recruitment?
Don’t worry about having a “traditional” background. Recruitment values transferable skills. If you’re driven, resilient, and ambitious, you’re already well on your way.
Be prepared to work hard and stay consistent. It can be tough at first, but the personal and professional growth is unmatched. Adopt a growth mindset, stay curious, learn from those around you, and don’t fear mistakes. They’re often your best teachers.
Above all, remember your “why.” Having clear personal and professional goals will keep you focused and motivated, especially during challenging times.
James’s journey is proof that with the right mindset and environment, rapid growth is absolutely possible. At Henderson Scott, we don’t just build careers. We build futures.
