In this month’s Consultant Career Story, we feature Grant Clements, Consulting Director in Henderson Scott’s Technology team. 

With nearly 20 years’ experience in recruitment and a decade at Henderson Scott, Grant has built a long-term career in a business built around performance, quality, and continuous growth. Here, he shares his journey into recruitment, how the business has evolved over time, and why Technology remains a strong market for experienced recruiters. 

Can you tell us about your career journey so far and what led you to join Henderson Scott?

I came into recruitment from an IT sales background almost 20 years ago and joined Henderson Scott in 2015. 

Before that, I’d worked at agencies where average performance was accepted. I was looking for a business where standards were higher and where I’d be surrounded by people who would push me to improve. 

That’s what stood out at Henderson Scott. There were strong performers across the business, and it was clear from the start that it was an environment where you were expected to deliver but also given the opportunity to develop. 

You've been with Henderson Scott for 10 years - what's kept you here, and how has the business evolved in that time?

Having worked at different agencies, finding the right environment makes a big difference. Being surrounded by high performers and having the space to do well has been key for me. 

Over the past 10 years, the business has evolved significantly. We’ve moved from a focus on traditional IT and IT sales into a broader professional services offering, now covering Digital Change and Transformation, Software Development, AI, as well as Sales & Marketing, Accountancy & Finance, and Legal. 

That growth means we can offer a more complete service to our clients, while also creating more opportunities across the business. 

What does your role as Consulting Director involve? 

My focus is on driving the contract and interim side of the Technology business. 

A big part of that is delivering a high level of service and staying close to the market. Many of our client relationships have been built over a long period, so consistency and quality are key. 

It’s about delivering results and building long-term partnerships with our clients. 

How would you describe the Technology recruitment market right now, and what makes it an attractive space to build a career?

Like most markets at the moment, there are challenges, but Technology continues to move quickly and create opportunity. 

If you understand where demand is and position yourself accordingly, there’s still a lot of growth. Areas such as AI and Machine Learning, Data Engineering, Digital Transformation, and Platform Engineering continue to drive that demand. 

Henderson Scott is well positioned within that. We’re large enough to have a strong presence, but still agile enough to move quickly with demand. 

For recruiters who are engaged with the market and willing to adapt, Technology is a fast-moving space with real long-term potential. 

What opportunities are there for experienced recruiters joining Henderson Scott, particularly within Technology? 

There’s a lot of flexibility in how you build your career here. 

If you identify a market with real potential and can demonstrate that, you’ll be backed. The business is built around quality rather than rigid KPIs, which gives people the space to develop their own approach. 

You’re given the tools and support to succeed, but there’s also an expectation that you take ownership of what you’re building. 

What advice would you give to someone considering their next move into a business like Henderson Scott? 

It depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re looking for something more comfortable, where you can do the minimum required, it’s probably not for you. 

If you want to work in a high-performance environment, surrounded by strong people and pushed to improve, then Henderson Scott is a great fit. That level of challenge is what helps you develop and get the most out of yourself.
